We started our morning by reading the book Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? by Dr. Seuss. I chose this book because it is fun for the children to try to make the sounds, and it asks questions. I wanted to talk with the children about questions today.
After our story I asked the children some questions and asked everyone to be quiet as we listened to their answers. (2 "Q" words) After they understood the process I let them ask each other questions. Some examples of questions they asked were "What color is Miss Jackie's shirt?" and "What color are my boots?" This was a fun exercise.
Later, I got out some play money and we discussed the attributes of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. Then I asked the children to find all of the quarters. This was tricky for them at first, but they figured out that the quarters were the biggest coins.
At snack time I poured their drinks from a quart mason jar.
While they were eating one of the children knocked on the table and said, "Knock, knock." So, I told them a couple of "knock, knock" jokes. They thought it was funny, so they tried their own. I got quite a kick out of their "jokes". It was a great opportunity for me to remind them about what a question is. I love little learning opportunities like that.
The children got to take home their "Q" folders today. They painted the outside of the folders with Q-tips on Wednesday.
Inside their folders was a copy of their letter "Q" tracing page and mini book from First School, a quarter worksheet from this site, and a letter "Q" identification worksheet from this site.
We ended our morning with music time. I got out our xylophones and we sang a few songs. Then I asked the children to play as quietly as possible, and then as loudly as they could. They loved it and it was good for reinforcing opposites and the concept of quiet.
We had a fun morning. We will start our study of the letter "R" on Monday. Have a great weekend.

What a great job you did with the letter Q!! I like how you used the concepts of questions & quiet. I always thought I should use something that they could hold in their hand, touch, feel, smell, etc... but I think your kids really got the letter Q with a combination of both!! Thanks for the ideas!!!
