Q is for Quilt

Today we continued our study of the letter "Q" by learning about quilts.  Here are some of the highlights of our morning.

The Josefina Story Quilt (I Can Read Book 3)
We started by reading the book The Josefina Story Quilt by Eleanor Coerr.  This book is about a hen named Josefina and her friend Faith as they travel west in a covered wagon.  Faith makes quilt blocks to tell the story of their journey.  It is a rather long book for preschoolers and, while I think this is a great book, it wasn't my first choice for preschoolers.  However, since I hadn't been to the library to find something else this was all I had in the way of quilt books.  The children surprised me though as they sat and listened intently to the entire story.  This can't always be said of some books we have read.

After our story I played a game of I-spy with the children.  I showed them the I-Spy quilt I made for my son for Christmas.  I gave each child something specific to look for in the quilt.  For example, I asked one child to find the two quilt squares that had ladybugs on them.  It was a great thematic activity that also taught visual discrimination.

Later the children glued pictures of quilts I had cut from magazines to their letter "Q" paper from DLTK.  This page will go in their alphabet binders

Next, I showed the children some different types of quilt block patterns that I made when I was teaching public school.  The children thought the different patterns, colors and shapes were neat.

So, I let them each make their own.  I had plenty of squares and triangles still cut from all those years ago.  What a time saver for today!  What I found interesting is that the girls wanted to make theirs just like my patterns (with the exception of which colors they chose).  However, my son wanted to use all squares and make a rainbow quilt.

He was so proud of his quilt block.  :-)

Wednesday is our painting day, and the children always enjoy painting.  I gave them Q-tips to paint their folders with today.

This center activity was in my feed reader this morning via Chasing Cheerios.  I thought it would be a great number recognition/counting activity so I printed it out before the children arrived.  If you would like to print out a number wheel for yourself you can find it at Homeschool Share.

We had a great morning and will finish our study of the letter "Q" on Friday.  Check back tomorrow for a frugal and fun idea.

Oh I really want to try and I-spy quilt. I am just not sure about quilting yet.

I also want to print out that number wheel. I saw it on CC as well. Looks like a really great tool!
